Ask
the Teaboy
Q:How
much resolution do I need to look for in a digital camera?
A:
The easiest way to answer this would be to turn the question around
and ask you "How large do you ever anticipate wanting to print
your images?" Statistically, 96% of people never print their
images larger than the standard 6x4" size. For this size you
only need 2 megapixels of resolution. Having said that, if you want
some cropping flexibility, or wish to make the occasional 8x10"
enlargement, then a 3 or 4mp camera would be better for you.
The
resolution question is one we're asked daily. Over the last 3 years
the resolution available has increased dramatically, and we are
actually getting to the point where, for most people, the resolution
available is exceeding need. We now have 5, 6, and 8 megapixel consumer
cameras, as well as even higher resolutions for some of the professional
units.
Q:
Is having more resolution than I need a bad thing?
A:
It can be. Higher resolution means bigger file sizes, which translates
to more and larger memory cards required, as well as computers with
greater processing power and hard drive space.
Although
some professionals will still be seeking greater resolution so they
can sell those enormous wall-sized images for advertising, the average
man on the street may well have more than he needs available today.
